The pilot plant will use synergies between the continuing conceptual work using digital prototyping at the DigiLab and its own design and engineering developments to fine-tune potential products and create the corresponding application technology. One of the first priorities will be to complete the R&D work on the production of the Pyradian multijunction cells in a single process.
Thin-film technology is rapidly becoming established as the methodology of choice for production of solar cells. It makes more efficient use of resources and is a more readily scalable technology. Production of the Pyradian solar cell will combine this established technology with innovative doping and laser-scribing techniques. Perfecting these technologies for full-scale production of multijunction cells in a single step will be the primary focus of development.
